Questions people ask before they call

What HJR builds, what the code actually requires, and when in a build it's worth picking up the phone.

Do you fabricate, or only install?

Both, in-house. HJR fabricates the railings, gates, enclosures and millwork and installs them with the same crew, so there's no middleman between the shop and the site.

It also means a change on site gets handled by the people who made the part.

What does railing or glass work cost?

It's priced per job — linear footage, material, how it mounts, and whether the site is ready all move the number, so Harman quotes after seeing drawings or the space. Quotes are free.

What materials do you work with?

Glass, wood including white oak, steel, stainless and powder-coated aluminum — across interior and exterior railings, shower enclosures, gates, mirrors, closets and custom millwork.

Is the glass work engineered to code?

HJR's glass work is engineered to meet city standards, so installations are built to pass inspection.

Your municipality has the final say on what applies to your project, and the building department confirms the figures before inspection.

How high does a guardrail have to be?

Under the BC Building Code a guard is required once a walking surface sits more than 600mm above what's below it, and the required height increases as the drop gets bigger. Openings have to be small enough that a 100mm sphere can't pass through, which is what sets picket spacing.

Those are the general figures. Your building department confirms what applies to your project, and the work is built to whatever they specify.

Glass, aluminum or wood — which should I pick?
  • Glass where there's a view worth keeping — maximum light, nothing to look through.
  • Powder-coated aluminum where upkeep matters. It doesn't rot, rust or need refinishing, which counts for a lot in this climate.
  • Wood with metal where the railing should read as joinery — an oak handrail over black spindles, or oak on a steel frame.

Harman will tell you which suits the space rather than which costs more.

When in the build should I call?

Earlier than most people do. Measurements come off the actual site, so seeing the space at framing stage — before drywall closes it in — makes the fit easier and the fabrication cleaner.

Do you do frameless shower enclosures?

Yes, including the hardware, plus glass shelving, niche details and mirrors cut to fit.

Do you do closets and built-in millwork?

Yes — walk-in closets, built-in storage and custom millwork in white oak and painted finishes, with glass display doors where you want them.

Do you do gates and privacy fencing?

Yes — aluminum privacy fencing and gates, fabricated and installed, along with exterior railings for decks and balconies.

Do you take commercial work?

Yes. Alongside residential jobs, HJR fabricates steel security bars and grilles for commercial storefronts, and works with builders and contractors on railing packages.

Are the design concepts on the site finished projects?

No. The concepts are renders developed for future projects — they show a direction rather than a completed install, and they're labelled that way. Everything in the selected work section is built and installed.
