Steel, aluminum & white oak railings
Powder-coated pickets, steel frames and white oak handrails — plus aluminum gates and privacy fencing, fabricated in the shop and installed by the same crew.
Metal
Powder coat doesn't ask anything of you.
Powder-coated aluminum doesn't rot, rust or need refinishing, which in a climate this wet is the entire maintenance budget going to zero. Slim black pickets have become the default look across Metro Vancouver for a reason — they largely disappear against a view while still reading as a railing.
Steel gets used where a frame has to carry something or span further than aluminum comfortably will, and stainless where the finish has to hold up outdoors.

Wood
Where the railing should read as joinery.
A white oak handrail over black spindles is the combination most people are actually picturing when they say they want something warmer than metal — it keeps the lightness of a thin picket but puts something worth touching at hand height.
Because the millwork and the metal both come out of the same shop, the handrail and the frame get made to each other rather than ordered separately and reconciled on site.
